Before we start our spring leagues, it's time to shake off the rust and develop your skills! Our Curling Academy is designed to improve your skills as a curler, no matter what level you might be at!

This is a two-week academy where you'll work on all aspects of curling. Sign up in advance for both weeks, and save $5!  Or, if you can't make it both nights, you can sign up for the night that works with your schedule.

    If you are....

    • New to curling, never tried it.  Sign up as a Freshman for the beginner course, and start with a night of instruction, then build on it in the second night as you get fully ready to play in a league.
    • I've done it once or twice, but I'm looking for more instruction!  Sign up as a Sophomore, and we'll help you with review of the basics, then build on that with more work on skills and concepts of the game, as well as strategy & game play.
    • I've played in leagues, but I want to learn how to curl better! Sign up as an Undergrad, and work with some of our most experienced curlers to improve your skills in a mix of drills and game situations.

Try the sport of curling! Learn how to deliver a stone, and how to sweep it down the ice. No experience necessary.

Eventbrite - Learn to Curl in Valencia

You've seen the sport in the Olympics, you've heard about it from someone you know, and you've thought, “hey, I wonder if I can do that?” Come find out for yourself! With no experience necessary, come on out to see what the roaring game is all about. Learn how to deliver a stone, and how to sweep it down the ice. Find out what hog lines, hacks, buttons, and houses all have to do with it. Bring your families out and learn together.

Our instructors will give you an overall understanding of what you need to play the game. You'll learn the basics of throwing, sweeping, and some basic game flow and strategy. By the end of just one session, you can be ready to join our leagues and master the game!

    What to Wear

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing that you can lunge in (stretch!), warm socks, and rubber-soled, closed toe shoes. Sneakers work well. We suggest no Converse, Toms, or other low-profile soles—your feet will get cold! Dress in layers—it can be cold on the ice, but you'll warm up once you start sweeping.

Curling is an accessible sport and we welcome participants who use wheelchairs, and others with limited mobility. Use of arms and hands is required, but we can provide a delivery aid (delivery stick) to release the stone without bending down. Please contact us in advance if you have questions or to discuss any special accommodations.

    Release Forms

All adult participants must sign Hollywood Curling's adult release form. All minor participants (under 18) must have their parent or guardian sign Hollywood Curling's minor release form. Any additional guests (photographers, spectators, etc.) must also provide a signed release form before being allowed on the ice. You may download and fill out the release forms in advance, or we will have paper copies available at the event.

    Venue and Parking

This class will be held at Ice Station Valencia. Meet us just inside the main entrance, near the elevator. We recommend that you arrive 10 minutes early. This venue has a large parking lot with plenty of free parking available.

Eventbrite - Learn to Curl in Valencia

Our Learn to Curl clinics are perfect for absolute beginners.  And our crack instructors are so amazing, you will know enough to sign up for a league after attending a single session.  With the start of the next league always just around the corner, you can go from newbie to league contender lickity-split!

What should I expect?
Hollywood Curling schedules a Learn to Curl sessions through out the year. At a Learn to Curl, we devote the entire night to the introduction and instruction of curling. A Learn to Curl is ideal for those who have never tried the sport before, but are curious to learn the basics. This is the perfect opportunity to try it out in a pressure free environment.
We start with an ice safety meeting prior to stepping on the ice. You’ll spend about an hour or so on the ice, learning about delivery, sweeping and the finer points of the game.

What kind of equipment do I need?
Hollywood Curling provides all the necessary equipment for this session. Simply wear loose fitting pants (jeans are not recommended), and a sweatshirt. You should dress in layers - it can be chilly on the ice, but you heat up quickly once you start playing and sweeping.   Bring clean, flat-soled, close toed, comfortable shoes - Tennis shoes or sneakers work well - and warm socks.  (Toms, Converse and Vans are not recommended, as your toes will be very cold).

When will I be good enough to play in a league?
After your very first lesson! Once you learn the basics, the best way to get better is to continue to play. Whether by clinics or joining our short leagues, just getting on the ice and throwing stones will make you better. Of course, if you take advantage of our Learn to Curl sessions, before, it can only help. Plus, the more you play, the more you’ll get to know other members; form a team you’ll enjoy playing with the entire league.

Have a large group and can’t make it to a Learn to Curl night?
Think about booking a private party. Check out the Parties Page for more information.

Details of the game include:

  • Curling is a team game. Local teams are organized by members as they are for bowling or golf leagues and can be categorized into mens, ladies, couples, juniors, seniors, or family groups. Teams can also be organized for special competitions or groups of any age or skill level. Curlers interested in state, national and world competition can enter many events to sharpen their skills.

  • Each team has a skip that acts as team captain and strategist. Strategy is a major factor in curling and is as important as shooting skill. Some people call curling "chess on ice".
  • Each player shoots or delivers two stones at each end, or inning, alternating with their counterpart on the opposing team. Curling is designed to allow play in both directions. All four team members shoot two stones at each end and sweep for their teammates' shots. While one player shoots, two sweep as needed. Sweeping polishes the ice so the stone travels farther and vigorous sweeping requires fitness.
  • The object of shooting is to get the stone, or rock, to come to rest at a predetermined place (a draw or guard) or to move another rock (a takeout or raise). The score is determined after each end of 16 stones. A 12-foot circle, the house, is the scoring area. Stones in the house must be close to the tee (center) than any opposing stone to score. The maximum score in one end is eight points. Typically, one to three points are scored.
