We're back in beautiful downtown Los Angeles!

You’ve watched curling on TV during the Winter Olympics, but you never thought you’d have the chance to try it. That changes now! Hollywood Curling, LA County’s only organization dedicated to the sport, will offer a curling pop-up at the Holiday Ice Rink in Pershing Square. You can drop in for a few minutes to learn the basics and throw a single stone, or stick around for the full hour and get some more in-depth instruction. Either way, there’ll be a team of experienced curlers on hand to teach you, as well as all the equipment you’ll need—and it costs just ten bucks! Just wear comfortable (and warm) clothing and flat-soled shoes (runners or sneakers recommended; avoid thin soled shoes like Toms, Converse, Vans, etc... so your feet don't freeze!)

    About the sport of curling

The popular sport of curling, a game in which 42-pound granite stones are hurled down a 150-foot sheet of ice at a central target while teammates use brushes or brooms to sweep the ice in the path of the stone, has seen a tremendous increase in popularity in the US in the past decade. Owing large in part to the televised coverage during the Winter Olympics in Torino in 2006, Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014, Americans have been flocking to the sport with intrigue and fascination. The sport has seen explosive expansion in recent years, particularly in the area of arena clubs like Hollywood Curling, which share the ice with hockey players and figure skaters.

Our Learn to Curl clinics are perfect for absolute beginners.  And our crack instructors are so amazing, you will know enough to sign up for a league after attending a single session.  With the start of the next league always just around the corner, you can go from newbie to league contender lickity-split!

What should I expect?
Hollywood Curling schedules a Learn to Curl sessions through out the year. At a Learn to Curl, we devote the entire night to the introduction and instruction of curling. A Learn to Curl is ideal for those who have never tried the sport before, but are curious to learn the basics. This is the perfect opportunity to try it out in a pressure free environment.
We start with an ice safety meeting prior to stepping on the ice. You’ll spend about an hour or so on the ice, learning about delivery, sweeping and the finer points of the game.

What kind of equipment do I need?
Hollywood Curling provides all the necessary equipment for this session. Simply wear loose fitting pants (jeans are not recommended), and a sweatshirt. You should dress in layers - it can be chilly on the ice, but you heat up quickly once you start playing and sweeping.   Bring clean, flat-soled, close toed, comfortable shoes - Tennis shoes or sneakers work well - and warm socks.  (Toms, Converse and Vans are not recommended, as your toes will be very cold).

When will I be good enough to play in a league?
After your very first lesson! Once you learn the basics, the best way to get better is to continue to play. Whether by clinics or joining our short leagues, just getting on the ice and throwing stones will make you better. Of course, if you take advantage of our Learn to Curl sessions, before, it can only help. Plus, the more you play, the more you’ll get to know other members; form a team you’ll enjoy playing with the entire league.

Have a large group and can’t make it to a Learn to Curl night?
Think about booking a private party. Check out the Parties Page for more information.

Details of the game include:

  • Curling is a team game. Local teams are organized by members as they are for bowling or golf leagues and can be categorized into mens, ladies, couples, juniors, seniors, or family groups. Teams can also be organized for special competitions or groups of any age or skill level. Curlers interested in state, national and world competition can enter many events to sharpen their skills.

  • Each team has a skip that acts as team captain and strategist. Strategy is a major factor in curling and is as important as shooting skill. Some people call curling "chess on ice".
  • Each player shoots or delivers two stones at each end, or inning, alternating with their counterpart on the opposing team. Curling is designed to allow play in both directions. All four team members shoot two stones at each end and sweep for their teammates' shots. While one player shoots, two sweep as needed. Sweeping polishes the ice so the stone travels farther and vigorous sweeping requires fitness.
  • The object of shooting is to get the stone, or rock, to come to rest at a predetermined place (a draw or guard) or to move another rock (a takeout or raise). The score is determined after each end of 16 stones. A 12-foot circle, the house, is the scoring area. Stones in the house must be close to the tee (center) than any opposing stone to score. The maximum score in one end is eight points. Typically, one to three points are scored.
