You’ve watched curling on TV during the Winter Olympics, but you never thought you’d have the chance to try it. That changes now! Hollywood Curling, LA County’s only organization dedicated to the sport, will offer a curling pop-up at the Holiday Ice Rink in Pershing Square. You can drop in for a few minutes to learn the basics and throw a single stone, or stick around for the full hour and get some more in-depth instruction. Either way, there’ll be a team of experienced curlers on hand to teach you, as well as all the equipment you’ll need—and it costs just ten bucks! Just wear comfortable (and warm) clothing and flat-soled shoes (runners or sneakers recommended; avoid thin soled shoes like Toms, Converse, Vans, etc... so your feet don't freeze!)
About the sport of curlingThe popular sport of curling, a game in which 42-pound granite stones are hurled down a 150-foot sheet of ice at a central target while teammates use brushes or brooms to sweep the ice in the path of the stone, has seen a tremendous increase in popularity in the US in the past decade. Owing large in part to the televised coverage during the Winter Olympics in Torino in 2006, Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014, Americans have been flocking to the sport with intrigue and fascination. The sport has seen explosive expansion in recent years, particularly in the area of arena clubs like Hollywood Curling, which share the ice with hockey players and figure skaters.
