2018 Fall BEGINNER FEATURES 9-Week League - Valencia

Sundays at 6:15pm (please plan on arriving 1 hour earlier to cool rocks - your league manager will provide more details)

    September 23 through December 16

No league play on October 28th - come play in our Halloween Spooktacular Mini-Spiel instead!
No curling on October 7th, November 25th (Happy Thanksgiving!), and December 2nd

Note: the start time for November 11th may be changed to 7:45pm

    Ice Station Valencia
    22745 Smyth Drive
    Valencia, CA 91355

Join us for a fun FEATURES league on Sunday nights, and enjoy a curling tradition called "broomstacking" in the bar each night!  Limited to 8 teams, we will take a waitlist once we are full, and if it's possible to expand the league, we will do our best to get everyone in.

This is a beginner's league - anyone can sign up, but there is a maximum of two experienced players per team. You could also consider our open features league at 8:15pm, which has no team restrictions. (You can sign up for both leagues if you want!).

Due to the expected high demand for this league, all players must register individually. This helps us ensure that membership dues are current and that Platinum members can make the most of their early signup benefit.

Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Incomplete teams will be paired with free agents as needed. Payment is required to hold your spot.

We no longer charge an extra fee for online payments, so please pay online and avoid the hassle of sending a check. Any checks must be received within 5 business days of registration, or your spot may be given to a member on the wait list.

    Rules

There are a few rules we need to enforce to make the sign up process fair for everyone. Help us make the process go smoothly by reading the rules below:

    • Members must be in good standing in order to register.
    • Payment must be received in full in order to hold your spot. If you plan on paying by check, we will hold your spot for 5 business days from the date of registration. Please let us know if you'll be paying by check and we'll keep an eye out for it. If we have not received any payment after 5 days, we may release your reserved spot to the waiting list.
    • Teams that don't submit a full roster at the time of registration may have a free agent assigned to their team.

    Cancellation/Refund Policy (Updated/New!):

    • Requests to withdraw from a league with 8+ days notice prior to start of league will be eligible for a full refund, and must be received in writing or via email. There will be NO refund for any cancellations within 7 days of the first night of league.
    • Payment is required at the time of booking in order to secure your spot. Failure to pay prior to 7 days before the event may result in forfeiture of your registration to someone else on the waitlist.
    • Leagues that require membership will include all guests of members. Memberships may be completed online prior to or during the registration process, and must be in good standing in order to play. Failure to pay membership dues prior to the start of a league may result in forfeiture of games, suspension from league play, or other penalties.

    Helmet Policy
We require that participants under the age of 12 provide their own helmets, which must be worn at all times when on the ice.  12+ helmets are recommended, but it is ultimately up to parental discretion. All minors will require parental or guardian consent at the first night of league.

      Five Rock Free Guard Rule
Reflecting USA Curling and the World Curling Federation's recent rule change, this league will be subject to the 5-rock Free Guard Zone. No opponents' rocks may be eliminated from the Free Guard Zone (the area between the hog line and the tee line, excluding the house) until after 5 rocks have been delivered. More detail and strategy considerations in this blog post.

We're back in beautiful downtown Los Angeles!

You’ve watched curling on TV during the Winter Olympics, but you never thought you’d have the chance to try it. That changes now! Hollywood Curling, LA County’s only organization dedicated to the sport, will offer a curling pop-up at the Holiday Ice Rink in Pershing Square. You can drop in for a few minutes to learn the basics and throw a single stone, or stick around for the full hour and get some more in-depth instruction. Either way, there’ll be a team of experienced curlers on hand to teach you, as well as all the equipment you’ll need—and it costs just ten bucks! Just wear comfortable (and warm) clothing and flat-soled shoes (runners or sneakers recommended; avoid thin soled shoes like Toms, Converse, Vans, etc... so your feet don't freeze!)

        About the sport of curling

The popular sport of curling, a game in which 42-pound granite stones are hurled down a 150-foot sheet of ice at a central target while teammates use brushes or brooms to sweep the ice in the path of the stone, has seen a tremendous increase in popularity in the US in the past decade. Owing large in part to the televised coverage during the Winter Olympics in Torino in 2006, Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014, Americans have been flocking to the sport with intrigue and fascination. The sport has seen explosive expansion in recent years, particularly in the area of arena clubs like Hollywood Curling, which share the ice with hockey players and figure skaters.

        CURLING IN AWESOMETOWN!

You've seen the sport in the Olympics, you've heard about it from someone you know, and you've thought, "hey, I wonder if I can do that?"  Come find out for yourself!  With no experience necessary, come on out to see what the roaring game is all about.  Learn how to deliver a stone, and how to sweep it down the ice.  Find out what hoglines, hacks, buttons, and houses all have to do with it.  Bring your families out and learn together.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing that you can lunge in (stretch!), warm socks, and rubber soled, closed toe shoes.  Sneakers work well.  (We suggest no Converse, Toms, or other low-profile soles- your feet will get cold!).  Dress in layers (it can be cold on the ice, but you'll warm up once you start sweeping).

Our instructors will give you an overall understanding of what you need to play the game.  You'll learn the basics of throwing, sweeping, and some basic game flow & strategy.  By the end of just one session, you can be ready to join our fall league and master the game!

Spaces must be reserved in advance.  Kids 8 and up are welcome, but require a parent or guardian to sign the waiver.  Please arrive 10 min early to complete waivers and registration.

STICK AROUND AFTERWARDS FOR A BEER IN THE BAR, AND GET TO KNOW HOLLYWOOD CURLING!

Try the sport of curling! Learn how to deliver a stone, and how to sweep it down the ice. No experience necessary.

Eventbrite - Learn to Curl in Valencia

You've seen the sport in the Olympics, you've heard about it from someone you know, and you've thought, “hey, I wonder if I can do that?” Come find out for yourself! With no experience necessary, come on out to see what the roaring game is all about. Learn how to deliver a stone, and how to sweep it down the ice. Find out what hog lines, hacks, buttons, and houses all have to do with it. Bring your families out and learn together.

Our instructors will give you an overall understanding of what you need to play the game. You'll learn the basics of throwing, sweeping, and some basic game flow and strategy. By the end of just one session, you can be ready to join our leagues and master the game!

        What to Wear

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing that you can lunge in (stretch!), warm socks, and rubber-soled, closed toe shoes. Sneakers work well. We suggest no Converse, Toms, or other low-profile soles—your feet will get cold! Dress in layers—it can be cold on the ice, but you'll warm up once you start sweeping.

        Accessibility

Curling is an accessible sport and we welcome participants who use wheelchairs, and others with limited mobility. Use of arms and hands is required, but we can provide a delivery aid (delivery stick) to release the stone without bending down. Please contact us in advance if you have questions or to discuss any special accommodations.

        Release Forms

All adult participants must sign Hollywood Curling's adult release form. All minor participants (under 18) must have their parent or guardian sign Hollywood Curling's minor release form. Any additional guests (photographers, spectators, etc.) must also provide a signed release form before being allowed on the ice. You may download and fill out the release forms in advance, or we will have paper copies available at the event.

        Venue and Parking

This class will be held at Ice Station Valencia. Meet us just inside the main entrance, near the elevator. We recommend that you arrive 10 minutes early. This venue has a large parking lot with plenty of free parking available.
