    About the sport of curling

The popular sport of curling, a game in which 42-pound granite stones are hurled down a 150-foot sheet of ice at a central target while teammates use brushes or brooms to sweep the ice in the path of the stone, has seen a tremendous increase in popularity in the US in the past decade. Owing large in part to the televised coverage during the Winter Olympics in Torino in 2006, Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014, Americans have been flocking to the sport with intrigue and fascination. The sport has seen explosive expansion in recent years, particularly in the area of arena clubs like Hollywood Curling, which share the ice with hockey players and figure skaters.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hollywood Curling to host free wheelchair curling class with US Paralympic team captain Patrick McDonald

Los Angeles – May 10, 2014 - Curling may not be the best-known sport in America, especially in Southern California, but Hollywood Curling, the only organization dedicated to curling in Los Angeles County, wants to make sure everyone can try it out.

On June 28, 2014, Hollywood Curling will host a free curling class for wheelchair-bound athletes taught by Patrick McDonald, an international wheelchair curling champion and skip (that’s curling-speak for captain) of the US curling team at the 2014 Winter Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia. The class will run from 7:30 to 9:30 PM and will be held at Ice Station Valencia, 27745 Smyth Dr., Valencia, California.  Advance registration is required via www.hollywoodcurling.org .  [CLICK HERE TO VIEW EVENT PAGE ON WEBSITE]

A US Army veteran, McDonald lost the use of his legs in 1991 when an armored personnel carrier he was riding in rolled over on the way back from patrol in Korea. He has won numerous medals at wheelchair curling championships around the world and has been the skip for Team USA since 2012. His team came in fourth at the 2010 Winter Paralympic Games in Vancouver and in fifth at the 2014 games in Sochi. In addition to curling, McDonald is also active in golf, bowling and kayaking, and he hopes to one day compete at the Summer Paralympic Games in shooting. He is originally from California but now lives in Madison, Wisconsin.

No curling experience whatsoever is required for the class, which will cover both the rules and basics of curling in general, as well as the special skills and equipment needed for wheelchair athletes. This event is reserved for those individuals who are non-ambulant or can only walk very short distances. This includes athletes with significant physical impairments in lower leg/gait function, such as spinal injury, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, or double leg amputation, who use a wheelchair for daily mobility. Both men and women are encouraged to attend.

The class is presented in partnership with the Triumph Foundation, whose goal is to inspire individuals with spinal cord injuries to keep moving forward with their lives by pushing themselves to get better every day. Ice Station Valencia has also generously agreed to donate ice time for the class. For information about sponsoring this event, please email Dwight Okahara at Dwight@HollywoodCurling.org.

Wheelchair curling is an internationally recognized sport, and competitive play is governed by the World Curling Federation. For more information on wheelchair curling, visit http://www.worldcurling.org/about-wheelchair-curling.
