    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hollywood Curling to Host Two Valentine's Day Learn to Curl Events, Complete with Roses and Curling-Stone Chocolates

LOS ANGELES – January 5, 2017 – Looking for a unique Valentine's Day date? Why not try curling? Hollywood Curling Club, Los Angeles County's only organization dedicated to the sport, will be offering a pair of Valentine's Day-themed Learn to Curl date nights.

Registration for two includes a two-hour Learn to Curl session as well as a long-stemmed rose and handmade curling-stone chocolates. No curling experience whatsoever is required; Hollywood Curling's expert instructors will cover the basics of throwing, sweeping and strategy and get participants curling in a real game. All necessary equipment will be provided; participants just need to wear warm, comfortable clothes and flat, rubber-soled shoes.

The Learn to Curls will take place on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 10:15 PM at the Pasadena Ice Skating Center, 300 Green St. in Pasadena and Sunday, Feb. 12 at 7:45 PM at Ice Station Valencia, 27745 Smyth Dr., in Valencia. Registration for both events is available online at http://hollywoodcurling.org/learntocurl. A couples registration is $60 and includes two spaces in the Learn to Curl, a long-stemmed rose and curling-stone chocolates. (Solo registration is also available for $25 and does not include a rose or chocolates.)

Hollywood Curling also has more Learn to Curl options scheduled if Valentine's Day isn't convenient: There will be two-hour Learn to Curl sessions at the Pasadena Ice Skating Center at 10:15 PM on Jan. 7, 21 and 28, and Feb. 8, all Saturday evenings. There's also an outdoor pop-up curling session at the ice rink in Pershing Square in downtown LA on Jan. 8 at 8:30 AM. (The pop-up is a 1-hour session that costs just $5!) And there'll be even more chances to learn to curl throughout the year, with dates to be announced soon. To register, and for more information on all upcoming events, visit http://hollywoodcurling.org/learntocurl.

    About the sport of curling
The popular sport of curling, a game in which 42-pound granite stones are hurled down a 150-foot sheet of ice at a central target while teammates use brushes or brooms to sweep the ice in the path of the stone, has seen a tremendous increase in popularity in the US in the past decade. Owing in large part to the televised coverage during the Winter Olympics in Torino in 2006, Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014, Americans have been flocking to the sport with intrigue and fascination. The sport has seen explosive expansion in recent years, particularly in the area of arena clubs like Hollywood Curling, which share ice with hockey players and figure skaters.

Q: How come we aren't in Panorama City any more?

A:  You probably noticed that we didn't return to Valley Ice Center in the fall like we've normally done in the past.  This was for several reasons.  Primarily, the ice conditions at the VIC were becoming completely unplayable on sheets A and B, due to a severe heave in one corner of the rink, which they were not able to improve for us. At the same time, the Olympic sheet in Valencia became available during the same Sunday night slot, and faced with a decision between 4 playable sheets in Valencia and 2 in Panorama City, with only 5 sets of stones we chose to play in Valencia for the Fall.

We have a great relationship with Lloyd, the general manager, who was always willing to help us out, as far as the owners would let him.  We had planned to return to the VIC for a short league in January, but the owners decided to reallocate that slot for their own personal stick time instead. Additionally, last spring when we tried to work with the owners to do a set up in the parking lot for outreach during CicLAvia, they were unwilling to give us any space for our street curling set up, unwilling to let us park food trucks there that we were willing to coordinate, and not interested in renting out ice time during the day so we could get people on the ice.

Ultimately we have to vote with our wallets and it became clear that Valencia is the better investment for now. While the drive is farther for most of us, our league players have been much happier with the playability of the ice and the social aspect of sticking around to broomstack after a game.  We've continued to foster healthy relationships with other rinks around town, and we are excited to be starting a new partnership with the rink in Pasadena in January and February.  Our goal is to continue to expose new people to the sport of curling, while fostering curlers at the local, national and international level.  We believe that expanding the sport to more rinks in Los Angeles benefits us all. This does not preclude us from returning to the VIC in the future. We will continue to monitor their ice and available ice times.

Thank you to all of you who have made the trek up to Valencia this year, and we hope to see you there and in Pasadena, not to mention our pop up events around the city in 2017 and beyond!

Charity match pairs up Hollywood stars, best-in-the-world curlers to benefit youth sports

(Valencia, Calif.) UPDATED June 27, 2016 – Most Southern Californians won’t be spending their Fourth of July weekends on ice. But from July 1 to 3, the coolest place to be will be Ice Station Valencia, as Hollywood Curling’s annual Summer Blockbuster Bonspiel brings curlers from around the world for a weekend of fun and competition.

Anybody can take part by watching some of their favorite Hollywood celebs take to the ice during a free celebrity match for charity on July 2! Confirmed participants include:

    • Jeremy Miller, best known as Ben Seaver in the hit family sitcom Growing Pains
    • R.J. Mitte, who played Walter White Jr. in AMC's Breaking Bad, and had a recurring role on Switched at Birth

Each Hollywood celebrity will be paired up with a curling expert, including Olympians (Mike Harris, who won a silver medal for Canada in Nagano in 1998; and Debbie McCormick, captain of the US women’s team in 1992, 2002, 2010 and 2014), national champions (Becca Hamilton, who won in 2014, and her brother Matt Hamilton, who won in 2015) and other world-class performers (top American curler Jamie Sinclair, top Canadian curler Colin Hodgson, and Director of High Performance for USA Curling Derek Brown).

The celebrity game will begin at 8 PM at Ice Station Valencia, 27745 Smyth Drive in Valencia.
